In Ukraine, every person remembers the taste of the grated pie from our childhood. My mother or grandmother often cooked this pie to tea. The traditional filling was jam, and the pie was baked on a tray. After it cooled, the pie was cut into cubes. As a result, this pie looked like cookies with filling. It is a delicious dessert.
I used fresh berries and rhubarb for the filling that slightly changed the traditional look and taste of the pie. My version of the pie has high sides and lots of filling.
You can substitute strawberries with blackberries or blueberries.
Ingredients for the dough
The recipe is designed for a mold 20 cm in diameter and 3.5 cm high.
- 220 gr all-purpose flour
- 50 gr sugar
- 5 gr baking powder
- 110 gr butter
- 1 egg
For the filling
- 300 gr strawberries
- 150 gr rhubarb
- 70 gr sugar
- 3 tsp corn starch
- 1 tbsp lemon juice

Method of cooking
Combine flour, sugar and baking powder. Mix well.
Grate very cold butter into the dry ingredients, or grind everything in a blender with knives to crumbs.
Add an egg and quickly knead the dough.
Wrap the dough in food film and leave in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Prepare the filling. Clean the rhubarb and cut it. Also cut the strawberries. Add sugar and cornstarch. Stir well.
Divide the dough into two parts. Bigger and smaller.
Roll out most of it, put it in a form and align the edges.
Put half of the sugar and starch mixture on the dough.
Spread the filling with the rest of the sugar-starch mixture on top.
Grate the rest of the dough on top of the pie filling.
Bake in an oven heated to 180°C for 30-40 minutes. Cool down.
Fresh berries release a lot of juice, there is a risk that the juice may leak out of the mold. Consider this moment while baking the grated pie.
